Jhapan Mela - The Snake Festival in Bankura Bishnupur in West Bengal

If you’re looking to do something offbeat and exploring the lesser known customs and traditions of India, head to the hinterland of West Bengal this August, and experience what it’s like to live with snakes and tribals. Drive 132km from Kolkata, to a small town called Bishnupur. Otherwise famous for its terracotta temples and Baluchari sarees, it’s only in the month of August that focus shifts to something unique in this town.
West Bengal is famous for its various cultural heritage and the unique traditions. Jhapan is one of the most unique festivals celebrated in West Bengal. The festival is dedicated to Goddess Mansha, Mansha Devi is the daughter of Lord Shiva, who is also considered to be the Goddess of Snakes. People of Bishnupur in Bankura distict of West Bengal celebrate this day in a very big way.
Jhapan - The Snake Festival celebrates in the month of Shravan (mid-August). People worship Goddess Mansha - the Snake Goddess in this season, for good rainfall and enhancement of the fertility of their land. The festival is celebrated with local fairs and other festivities, like stage shows of local plays and snake shows by local snake charmers.

Bishnupur (or Vishnupur) was the capital of the Mallabhum kingdom, once the most important Hindu dynasty in Bengal (founded in the 8th century CE and lasting until the early 19th century). Surrounded by old fortifications, the town has more than a dozen terracotta temples.
Jhapan is one of the most unique festivals celebrated in West Bengal. The festival is dedicated to Goddess Mansha, who is also considered to be the Goddess of Snakes.
